Oak Ridge's Morning Coffee Now Reaches the K-25 Gate

"We're like, this is the perfect pairing since there's nothing else out here." That's how Jennifer Marx, co-owner of Barriga Llena, described her decision to cook breakfast at the old Portal 4 entrance on the former K-25 site. She told WBIR she hopes the shop brings more options to the west end of Oak Ridge. WBIR's report on Portal 4's reopening

The locally owned coffee shops that Explore Oak Ridge lists sit around Jackson Square and along the Oak Ridge Turnpike. Since May 2026, a coffee shop has also been open on the former K-25 site, inside the building thousands of K-25 employees once used as their entrance to the plant. A morning coffee run in Oak Ridge can now run from Jackson Square all the way out to the K-25 site, and the same breakfast operator cooks at stops along the way.

Portal 4 Spent Decades as an Entrance and Then Sat Empty

For decades, Portal 4 was the employee entrance to the K-25 gaseous diffusion plant. After the plant shut down, the building sat empty. The Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee, known as CROET, spent a year and a half restoring it. WBIR credits the reopening to CROET and the Oak Ridge Discovery Foundation.

The coffee shop inside is called Portal Perk. Explore Oak Ridge's listing describes house-made hot and iced coffees, energy-drink mixes, pastries and treats, plus weekly food trucks. The listing posts these hours:

  • Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Sunday, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Those hours were posted in May 2026, around the time the shop opened, so a quick check before a Sunday drive is a good idea. The listing doesn't give a separate street address. The shop sits on the same K-25 grounds as the K-25 History Center, which WBIR describes as "just up the road."

The Discovery Foundation's case for putting a café here was bigger than coffee. Matt Mullins, the foundation's director of marketing and communications, told WBIR:

"Whatever brings them into Oak Ridge, this is a place where they can connect an incredible world-shaping history and sit down to learn something about the future of technology coming to this region. We are standing in the center of $12 billion of new nuclear development."

According to Mullins and Marx, the early customers were a mix of people passing through, people who came to reminisce, and people working on new nuclear projects at the K-25 Heritage Center. The site has always been a workplace, and the café gives it a place to sit down.

One Breakfast Kitchen, Three Corners of Town

Barriga Llena makes the new map easy to see. On Tuesdays from 7:30 to 11 a.m., it serves breakfast at Portal Perk. During the rest of the week, WBIR reported that it serves at Calamity's Coffee in Historic Jackson Square and at Hops and Hounds, a dog park and beer garden.

That makes three very different settings for the same breakfast kitchen:

  1. Calamity's Coffee, a coffee-and-tea shop in Historic Jackson Square.
  2. Hops and Hounds, a dog park with a beer garden.
  3. Portal Perk, a restored plant entrance on the former K-25 site.

Marx summed up the idea this way: "We believe food can tell a story and build community one plate at a time." Barriga Llena's schedule comes from WBIR's report at the time Portal Perk opened. The Barriga Llena Facebook page is the place to confirm where the kitchen is on a given morning.

Calamity's Has Become the City's Meeting Room

Calamity's Coffee sits at 219 Jackson Square and has been open since August 1, 2023. Its own description calls it a community gathering space. It hosts events and classes, stocks products from local small businesses, and has displays on Oak Ridge history.

The City of Oak Ridge chose Calamity's to host the first meeting of a new series called "Conversations with the City." The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 29, at 5:30 p.m., according to the city's September 28 announcement. That puts the coffee shop at the east end of the map in a civic role, while the newest shop sits at the opposite end, inside a piece of Manhattan Project history.

Jackson Square stays busy on Saturdays too. The city calendar lists the Oak Ridge Farmers' Market there on October 10 from 8 a.m. to noon and describes it as a long-running weekly market.

The Turnpike Stops in Between

Between Jackson Square and the K-25 gate, the Oak Ridge Turnpike has two more local coffee and breakfast spots.

Stop Where Open since Known for
Calamity's Coffee 219 Jackson Square Aug. 1, 2023 Coffee and tea, events, local products, Oak Ridge history displays
Bud's Farmhouse Coffee 1151 Oak Ridge Turnpike Valentine's Day 2021 Breakfast sandwiches, homemade yogurt, granola, fruit spreads
Hole in the Wall 979 Oak Ridge Turnpike Not listed Breakfast and lunch with online ordering
Portal Perk K-25 site, Portal 4 May 2026 House-made coffees, energy-drink mixes, pastries, weekly food trucks

Bud's Farmhouse Coffee belongs to musicians Jim Hynes and Anne Holland. WBIR's profile of the shop gives as much attention to Hynes's trumpet practice as to the menu. Its tourism listing is older than the others, so checking current hours before going is worthwhile. Hole in the Wall, at 979 Oak Ridge Turnpike, is a casual breakfast-and-lunch café that takes online orders.

One more name is joining the list. In August, The Oak Ridger reported that Scooter's Coffee was coming to the former Petro's Chili & Chips building. An October 1 update said the store was set to open Saturday, October 3, with free drinks for the first 100 customers. The Oak Ridger's opening report That report came out before the planned opening, so checking with the store before visiting is a good idea.

Pairing Portal Perk With the K-25 History Center

The K-25 History Center campus is at 652 Enrichment Street. It's open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., according to its visitor page. Adult admission is $15. Military members and seniors pay $10, as do visitors ages 10 to 17. Its museums include interactive exhibits with original artifacts and galleries on the Manhattan Project, K-25 operations, and the legacy of the atomic bomb.

Compare the two schedules and the timing problem becomes clear. Portal Perk closes at 3 p.m. every day. On Sundays, the café and the museum overlap only from 1 to 3 p.m. On a Sunday, it makes sense to get coffee first and tour the museum second, since the galleries stay open two hours after the café closes. On weekdays and Saturdays, a late-morning coffee and a midday museum visit fit comfortably before the café closes.

The K-25 grounds have also hosted larger public events this year. The free K-25 Reunion & Hootenanny on April 25, 2026 brought live music, a car show, food trucks and family activities to 652 Enrichment Street. On April 30, the Manhattan Project National Historical Park celebrated its 10th anniversary with free entry at K-25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the National Park Service. Both events came just before Portal Perk opened. Future gatherings at K-25 will have a café on site that's open every day of the week.

A Saturday That Covers the Whole Route

  1. Start at Jackson Square for the farmers' market, which the city calendar lists from 8 a.m. to noon, and get coffee at Calamity's.
  2. Drive west on the Oak Ridge Turnpike, past Hole in the Wall at 979 and Bud's Farmhouse Coffee at 1151.
  3. Get to Portal Perk after its 9 a.m. Saturday opening for a second coffee, while there's still plenty of time before the 3 p.m. close.
  4. Head up the road to the K-25 History Center, which stays open until 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
